What are the essential skills to be successful in the future?

03.09.2023

The list of skills needed to be successful in the future is long. I think at the top of this list of future skills is ‘adaptability’ – the ability to deal with change and adapt to an increasingly dynamic world.

The ability to change and not get stuck in the status quo is essential for companies and for us in a constantly evolving world. Hand on heart: most of us are not good at change. Today and tomorrow should preferably be the same as yesterday.

Change can be scary for many; it often challenges our comfort zone and triggers a fear of the unknown. However, this fear can be overcome and paves the way for personal and professional growth.

We’ve all heard it before: ‘Change starts with you!’ ☀️
But where to start?

For me, dealing with new situations can be divided into 3 categories:

  1. Mindset: I am curious, and I want to learn new things.
  2. Action: I know different ways of dealing with change. I can take the right action.
  3. Emotions: I stay relaxed when I change my plans. Deep down and at the mind level, most people know that change is essential for personal development and creating a better environment.

The biggest obstacles are our emotions: We get stressed when we change and leave our comfort zone. That’s why we don’t act, even when we realise this is necessary.

Leaving fear behind begins with a small action. This shows us that our fears are illogical. When we take action, we feel like we are in control, and we are less stressed about tackling new things.

Here’s a daily tip for re-framing:

Firstly, reflect on your emotions and consider what’s holding you back. Second, consider what you can do today as a small step to overcome those emotions and start a change.
